It’s been over 8 years since I last visit Redondo Beach, things has changed but not too much. I was invited to join a few bloggers for fresh live sea urchin (uni), yes you heard me right, LIVE!! At first I thought it was $6 each piece, but when I got there, I found out it’s $6.99/lb.
I was surprised to find a seafood market in Redondo Beach, I didn’t even know such place exist! I always been eating around the restaurant at the pier and never venture down here. You can find all sort of fresh seafood down here, starting from clams, shrimps, crawfishs, oysters, crabs…and fish. But what’s so interesting is that you can also find sea urchin here as well. Which was the reason we came here for.
So what you do is first ask them to pick a sea urchin for you, tell them you want a small one or big one..etc. I ask the guy to pick a big one for me, and he sure did pick a REALLY big one for me. My was the biggest among all the other sea urchin that he pick for my friends.
It’s still moving after they clean the internal….
My uni is very strong.. still moving after I ate half of it
I would suggest bring a bottle of water to wash the sea urchin a little bit since it was roughly clean and wash with tap water. Those fresh sea urchin actually were very light in taste, not flavorful like those serve in the restaurant. But it was still a very interesting experience eating sea urchin live by the pier. If you never been there before, it’s your chance to come try it out. They also have many other seafood here that they can steam and peel for you. But if you want it to be steam, you might need to wait for 20-30 mins.
